That's funny, Peter, as for years I wasn't sure of the spelling of "Karel" and I actually thought his surname was "God" - so you can imagine the problems I had trying to google him to check that he really existed outside of my imagination. Thanks to Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyła and the Christmas carol, 'God rest you, merry gentlemen', this post almost didn't happen!

Karel Gott - Mein Gott - (Gott being the german equivalent to God) - so you had a real encounter with the Allmighty - Enjoy your writing, Peter

Shocking! Have to admit, though, I've always thought that it was just Germans who did the 'soft drink' (ie beer swigging) in the streets (abandoned car parks in particular) while the Ruskis were more into the hard core stuff - siberian vodka, kindy kids with schnapps in their poppers at playtime, that sort of thing...

Hi Svet & Kyle,

I think it's fine to travel there now (and from what the National Park ranger was saying - war or no war, there will always be winter sports!)

I'm not sure how wholeheartedly I agree with that though!

But I guess it's as safe as it could be (to understand my scepticism, have a read of the post '<a href=http://www.europetrotter.org/2007/09/22/1-the-thrills%e2%80%a6" title="the thrills" rel="nofollow">the thrills</a>' and the follow-up '<a href="http://www.europetrotter.org/2007/09/22/2%e2%80%a6-and-the-spills%e2%80%a6" title="and the spills" rel="nofollow">and the spills</a>'. They're basically about when a chairlift broke down in Dombai and we had to jump off and hike back up to the top of the mountain...)

Happy holidays!

Thank you for a very interesting post!

That's pity that my last real mountain trip was about 20 years ago... So it's safe to travel there now?

Maybe we'll try it ;)

Best wishes,
Svet and Kyle

Living in australia we have oodles of mimosa (wattle). Now I'm curious to know if it has any celebratory significance.
